内容简介:

Taken from Appian's Roman History, the five books collected here form the sole surviving continuous historical narrative of the era between 133-35 BC - a time of anarchy and instability for the Roman Empire. A masterly account of a turbulent epoch, they describe the Catiline conspiracy; the rise and fall of the First Triumvirate; the murder of Julius Caesar; the formation of the Second Triumvirate by Antonius, Octavian, and Lepidus; and brutal civil war. A compelling depiction of the decline of the Roman state into brutality and violence, The Civil Wars portrays political discontent, selfishness and the struggle for power - a struggle that was to culminate in a titanic battle for mastery over the Roman Empire, and the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra by Octavian in 31 BC

原文赏析:

After a reverse, he ambushed him; Brutus then escaped and laid a counter-ambush, but inflicted no injury on the men ge trapped and simply told his own army to greet their opponents in a friendly manner, When they did not return the greetings and remained deaf to his attempt, Brutus let them go unharmed from the ambush. He then outflanked them by another route, again stopped them in a precipitous spot, and agin did not attack but greeted them. Seeing that Brutus was sparing Roman lives and deserved his reputation for wisdom and clemency, they felt great admiration for him, replied to the greeting, and went over to him. Gaius also surrendered to Brutus and was honourably treated by him, until after several attempts to tamper with the men's loyalty he was found out and put to death.

Brutus retreated up into the mountains with a fair-sized force. He intended to return to his camp or go down to the sea when night came, but he had been completely surrounded by guard-posts and spent the night under arms with all his men. He is reported to have looked up at the stars and said:' Forget not, Zeus, the author of these woes,' referring of course to Antonius. They say that Antonius himself later quoted the same line when he was beset by his own dangers, regretting that when he could have been numbered alongside Cassius and Brutus he had helped Octavian.
