书籍摘录:

PAC is related to the Latin words for “agree” and “peace.” The Pacific Ocean—that is, the “Peaceful Ocean”—was named by Ferdinand Magellan because it seemed so calm after he had sailed through the storms near Cape Horn. (Magellan obviously had never witnessed a Pacific typhoon.) PAC与拉丁语中表示“同意”和“平静”的单词有关。Pacific Ocean(太平洋)——即“平静的海洋”——是费迪南德·麦哲伦命名的,因为在航海穿过好望角附近的暴风雨后,他看到的这个海洋似乎非常平静。(麦哲伦显然从未见过太平洋的台风。)

原文赏析:

BELL comes from the Latin word meaning " war. " Bellona was the little-known Roman goddess of war, her husband, Mars, was god of war.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

antebellum: Existing before a war, especially before the American Civil War (1861- 1865).

* When World War I was over, the French nobility found it impossible to return to their extravagant antebellum way of life.

Often the word antebellum summons up images of ease, elegance, and entertainment on a grand scale that disappeared in the postwar years. That way of life in the American South depend...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUB means "under," as in subway, submarine, and substandard. A subject is a person who is under the authority of another. The word subscribe once meant "to write one's name underneath," and subscription was the act of signing at the end of a document or agreement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

subconscious: Existing in the mind just below the level of awareness.

* After dropping three dishes in a week I began to think that there might be some kind of subconscious urge to destroy my case of butterfingers.

We are generally not aware, or at least not fully...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VERB comes from the Latin verbum, meaning "word." A verb--or action word--appears in some form in every complete sentence. To express something verbally--or to verbalize something--is to say it or write it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

verbose: Using more words than are needed; wordy.

* The writing style in government publications has often been both dry and verbose--a deadly combination.

Americans brought up on fast-paced television have lost any patience they once had for verbosity. So most American writing is brisk, and American speakers usually don'...

Each of the important Roman gods and goddesses had many temples erected in their name. But in 27 B.C. a temple to all the gods together was completed in Rome; twice destroyed, it was ultimately replaced by a third temple around A.D. 126. This extraordinary domed structure is still one of the important sights of Rome, and the burial place for the painters Raphael

and Carracci and two kings. In Paris, a great church was completed in 1789–90; named the Panthéon, it was announced as the future resting place of France's great figures, and the bodies of Victor Hugo, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, and many others now rest within its walls.

In the Middle Ages, the Muslim empires stretching around much of the Mediterranean were theocracies, and the pope ruled most of modern-day Italy. But theocracies are rare today. Modern Iran and Saudi Arabia (and perhaps half a dozen others) are usually regarded as theocratic governments, since, even though Iran's president is elected by popular vote and Saudi Arabia is ruled by a royal family, the countries' laws are religious laws. But when a government tries to follow all the teachings of a single religion, things usually don't work out terribly well, so U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights forbid using religion as the principal basis for democracy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AG comes from the Latin word for "do, go, lead, drive." An agenda is a list of things to be done. An agent is usually someone who does things on behalf of another, just as an agency is an office that does business for others.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

agitate: (1) To move something with an irregular, rapid, violent action. (2) To stir up or excite.

* Philip found Louisa highly agitated at the new of her son's disappearance.

Agitate can mean to shake or stir something physically, but more often its meaning is emotional or political. Agitation for a c...
